P60 end of year certificate: what each part shows

  1. Tax year. The tax year the certificate covers, ending 5 April.
  2. Your details. Your name and National Insurance number (here a fictional QQ number).
  3. Pay and tax in this job. Your total pay from this employer for the year and the Income Tax they deducted.
  4. Previous employment. Pay and tax from an earlier job in the same year, if your employer was told about it.
  5. Final tax code. The tax code used for your last payday of the year.
  6. Employer. Your employer's name and PAYE reference, which you may need for a tax return.

Specimen with fictional data. The layout is simplified to show where each detail sits; your own document may look different.

If you've lost it

  • Ask your employer for a replacement first.
  • If they can't provide one, use the HMRC app or your personal tax account to see the same information.
  • Or contact HMRC and ask for it.

What a P60 shows and why you need it

The P60 is your employer's summary of your pay and the tax deducted for the whole tax year. It's the document most often asked for as proof of income, for example by a mortgage lender, and you'll use it to fill in the employment page of a Self Assessment return.

You only get a P60 if you're still working for that employer on 5 April. If you left during the year you'll have a P45 instead, and a P11D if you received taxable benefits.

One per job

If you had two jobs at the same time, you'll get two P60s. Add them together for your total employment income, but use each one separately on a tax return.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

When should I get my P60?

By 31 May after the end of the tax year, if you were working for that employer on 5 April. It can be on paper or electronic.

I left my job before 5 April. Do I get a P60?

No. You'll have received a P45 when you left. Your new employer, if you have one by 5 April, gives you a P60 covering your pay with them.

Can I print a P60 from my personal tax account?

Your personal tax account and the HMRC app show the same pay and tax figures your employer reported. If you need the certificate itself, your employer can issue a copy.
