Questions

Frequently asked
questions.

How do I claim a tax refund for work expenses?

Online through your HMRC personal tax account, by form P87, or on your Self Assessment return if you file one. Claims over £2,500 must go through Self Assessment.

Can I claim working from home relief?

Only if your employer requires you to work from home — because there is no office or it is closed. Choosing to work from home, even with your employer's agreement, does not qualify.

Should I use a tax refund company?

You can claim directly from HMRC for free. Refund companies often keep 30–40% of the refund and some have been found to make claims taxpayers were not entitled to.

How far back can I claim?

Four tax years. In 2026/27 you can still claim for 2022/23 onwards until 5 April 2027.
