Where to find your SA302 tax calculation and tax year overview
In your personal tax account
- Sign in to your HMRC online account.
- Go to Self Assessment, then 'More details about your Self Assessment returns and payments'.
- Choose the tax year and print the tax calculation (SA302) and the tax year overview.
From your accountant
- If your accountant files with commercial software, the calculation is printed from that software and may be called a tax computation.
- You can still print the tax year overview from your own HMRC account.
What it looks like
SA302 tax calculation: what each part shows
- Tax year and UTR. The tax year the calculation covers and your Unique Taxpayer Reference.
- Income by source. Each kind of income on the return, such as self-employment profit or rent.
- Allowances. The Personal Allowance and any other allowances taken off before tax.
- Tax by band. The Income Tax charged at each rate, and Class 4 National Insurance if you're self-employed.
- Total due. The total Income Tax and National Insurance due for the year — the figure lenders look at.
Specimen with fictional data. The layout is simplified to show where each detail sits; your own document may look different.
If you've lost it
- Print another copy from your HMRC online account: SA302s are kept for the last four years.
- If you have problems getting the documents, contact HMRC through its Self Assessment contact page.
SA302 and tax year overview: two documents
The SA302 is the tax calculation: it shows how your income turns into a tax bill. The tax year overview is a separate summary of what was due and what has been paid for that year. Self-employed mortgage applicants are often asked for both.
Tax years run from 6 April to 5 April. Ask your broker or lender which years they need before you print.
Do lenders accept printed copies?
HMRC says to check whether your mortgage provider accepts documents you've printed yourself, and publishes a list of lenders that accept self-printed SA302s. Most self-employed applicants never need a posted copy.
