Questions

Frequently asked
questions.

Is Small Business Bonus Scheme relief automatic?

No. You apply through your local council, and it does not carry over automatically when you move premises or change the business that occupies them.

What is rateable value?

An estimate of a property's annual rental value set by the Scottish Assessors, shown on your rates bill and the Scottish Assessors' website. Your bill is the rateable value multiplied by the poundage, less reliefs.

Does SBBS apply to short-term lets?

Only if the property holds a valid short-term let licence and meets the other conditions, including actual letting thresholds.

Can I appeal my rateable value?

Yes, through the Assessor. Because relief changes sharply at £12,000, £15,000, £20,000 and £35,000, a successful appeal can be worth much more than the reduction itself.
