What you sell

Platforms report sellers with 30+ sales or about £1,700+ in a calendar year to HMRC. Being reported is not a tax bill — whether tax is due depends on what you sell.

Income Tax due?

No

Selling your own unwanted things is not trading — there is no Income Tax to pay, even if the platform reports you.

Questions

Frequently asked
questions.

Will Vinted tell HMRC about me?

Since January 2024 UK platforms must send HMRC details of sellers who make 30 or more sales, or receive about £1,700 or more, in a calendar year. The first reports covered 2024 and were sent in January 2025.

Do I pay tax on clothes I sell on Vinted?

Not if they are your own used clothes sold for less than you paid. That is not trading and there is no Income Tax, even if the platform reports you.

When does selling become trading?

When you buy things to resell for profit, make things to sell, or sell regularly in a way that looks like a business. HMRC looks at factors such as frequency, intention and whether goods were bought to resell.

What about expensive items?

Selling a single personal item for more than £6,000 — a watch, jewellery or artwork — can create a Capital Gains Tax liability, though many such items sell at a loss.
