Why the SA302 matters
HMRC describes the SA302 as evidence of your earnings, in the form of a tax calculation, and gives mortgage applications as the typical use. You can print it from your HMRC online account under Self Assessment once 72 hours have passed since you filed. If an accountant files through software, they print the calculation from the software and you print the tax year overview from your own account.
HMRC also says to check whether your lender accepts documents you print yourself, and keeps a list of lenders that do.

Questions
Frequently asked questions.
How many years of SA302s do lenders want?
It varies by lender, so ask your broker. HMRC keeps SA302s available for the last four years and tax year overviews for any year.
Can I get an SA302 before I file?
No. The SA302 is the calculation of a filed return. You can print it 72 hours after filing online.
Do company directors need SA302s too?
If you file a Self Assessment return for your salary and dividends, yes, the SA302 and tax year overview prove that income. Lenders may also ask for the company's accounts.
